Tasmanian Biosecurity Awards Return

Jane Howlett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Government is calling for nominations to recognise Tasmanians working hard to keep our State pest, weed and disease-free.

The inaugural Tasmanian Biosecurity Awards last year recognised individuals, groups and organisations for their significant contributions to the State's biosecurity.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said all Tasmanians play a role in helping protect our State's primary industries, economy, environment and way of life from the adverse impacts of pests, weeds and diseases.

"A robust biosecurity system is a vital part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future and these awards provide a valuable opportunity to recognise achievement in the sector," Minister Howlett said.

"Last year's winners – Tasmanian Community Biosecurity Award recipient Robyn Lewis and Tasmanian Industry Biosecurity Award winner Nic Hansen – are great examples of people working hard to keep our biosecurity strong in the State."

Robyn won for her outstanding management of biosecurity threats to the Milford Forest property, an important ecological site for endemic and endangered species.

Nic was recognised for his contribution and assistance during the 2018 fruit fly incursion in Tasmania, and the successful emergency response and eradication that followed.

The two award categories are the Tasmanian Community Biosecurity Award and the Tasmanian Industry Biosecurity Award.

Nominations for this year's awards open on 1 July and will close 31 August 2024.
