The Tasmanian and Australian Governments are delivering better and safer roads around the State.
As part of this plan, the third and final stage of upgrades to Railton Road will start on Monday, 30 August after a $3.5 million contract was awarded to Tasmanian company AWC Pty Ltd.
The upgrades include widening and sealing the shoulder of Railton Road between Dawsons Siding Road and Mersey Main Road.
The improvements are jointly funded through the Australian Government's COVID-19 stimulus program and the Tasmanian Government's Road Safety Levy.
Improving safety on rural roads is a key focus of the Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024 and analysis of the State Road network identified this area as a priority for safety improvements based on potential risks.
Infrastructure improvements such as sealed shoulders help reduce the likelihood of crashes by providing additional space for drivers to recover control of a vehicle if it leaves the lane.
Total funding for these important regional road upgrades is $11.45 million.
The first stage of the upgrade – between Cement Works Road and Youngmans Road – was completed in early 2021. Stage Two – between Youngmans Road and Dawsons Siding Road – is currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2022.
