Safety, support and security at Royal Hobart Hospital's Emergency Department has been strengthened thanks to the commencement of Emergency Support Officers (ESOs) this week.
In a new initiative, eight ESOs have just completed an intensive training course and will provide a reassuring presence seven days a week in the ED, with two ESOs rostered on per shift.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said this new initiative was designed to support patients waiting in the ED, allowing for early identification of any behavioural changes or concerns.
"Our ESOs are supporting a safe and secure environment in the Royal ED by responding to and de-escalating aggressive incidents under the direction of the clinical team, and generally supporting visitors and patients in the ED and waiting room," Minister Barnett said.
"They will enable nursing and clinical staff to focus on patients and allow waiting room nurses to commence treatment and focus on clinical tasks.
"Inappropriate, aggressive, abusive and violent behaviour have no place in our hospitals and health facilities, and this is another important initiative we are taking to better support our staff and other patients.
"This comes after the launch of the A Healthy Dose of Respect media campaign, which reminds everyone to show respectful behaviour towards our people.
"The Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future supports a better health system, and by providing a safer, more supportive environment for our frontline health workers, more Tasmanians will be able to access high-quality healthcare."
