Tasmanian Fracking Ban Welcomed by Farmers

Farmers for Climate Action

Farmers for Climate Action has welcomed the fracking ban extension delivered by the Tasmanian Liberal Government.

The ban on fracking was extended until at least 2030 by Tasmanian Industry Minister Eric Abetz, citing "risks to our agricultural industries, branding and markets, public and environmental health, community cohesion".

FCA CEO Natalie Collard said farmers applauded the ban on fracking as it provides much-needed certainty for farmers and land managers across the state.

"Farmers lose from fracking. The negative impacts on farmland—and even neighbouring farmland—are too significant to ignore. "Fracking offers no benefit to landholders and profits flowing to mining companies and governments, not the people who care for the land. That's why Farmers for Climate Action continues to oppose fracking, standing alongside farmers who want to protect their land, livelihoods, and communities.

"This moratorium is a positive step toward protecting Tasmania's farmland and ensuring its long-term sustainability. We commend the government for listening to farmers and taking action to protect this valuable resource.

"The Tasmanian Government deserves credit for standing up for farmers against the coal seam gas companies and lobbyists."
