Tasmanian Government Prioritizes Partnership with Aboriginals

Members,

National Reconciliation Week for 2024 (27 May to 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Attending the National Reconciliation Week breakfast in Hobart, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Roger Jaensch, said this year's theme, Now more than ever, points to the importance of making real progress towards reconciliation.

"The Tasmanian Government is committed to ensuring that all views are heard as we progress new, stronger, Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural Heritage legislation and legislate amendments to the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995 to facilitate the return of more land to Aboriginal people.

"Importantly, we will also continue to work with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations to close the gap in life outcomes for Aboriginal people by building their capacity to deliver services that meet their communities' needs."

"Our focus for the year includes a whole-of-government Aboriginal engagement framework and toolkit to guide all levels of government to undertake appropriate and respectful engagement with all Tasmanian Aboriginal people on matters that affect them because we understand the importance of transforming government organisations, now more than ever.
