The Tasmanian Government has welcomed Ambulance Tasmania's five newest paramedics.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, welcomed the new starters – who have moved to Tasmania to take up these roles – and thanked them for the life-saving care they are already providing.
"Our Government is continuing to recruit more paramedics into the workforce, with this latest group of five interstate and overseas qualified paramedics starting work in our regions last week following completion of Ambulance Tasmania's orientation program," Minister Barnett said.
"This follows 19 new experienced paramedics who hit the road in July and 16 graduate paramedics who started in May.
"Pleasingly, I can also announce that the first tranche of 78 new paramedics will commence their roles next month, recruited under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"These experienced paramedics will start their four-week induction and orientation program at Ambulance Tasmania's headquarters in Cambridge before they also hit the road in different parts of the State.
"I look forward to welcoming more paramedics to Ambulance Tasmania in the months ahead as recruitment to these new positions continues."
In addition, Ambulance Tasmania is currently running a recruitment campaign that will see a new group of graduate paramedics commence in January 2025.
27 of the additional 78 full-time paramedics will be community paramedics and will be recruited over four years.
The community paramedics will be attached to 13 District Hospitals across the State. This is an innovative model of care that will see community paramedics working closely and collaboratively with Tasmanian Health Service health professionals to ease pressure on Emergency Departments and ambulance services, and to keep people in their own homes and communities, whenever this is safe and appropriate.
