Tasmanian Govt Steps In To Protect Rural Health

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health

The Tasmanian Government's commitment to partnering with outer-urban, regional and rural Tasmanian GP practices is a step closer today.

As part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, multi-year funding of up to $250,000 per year to support the viability of eligible GP practices will soon be available, with guidelines released today – fulfilling another commitment under our 100 day plan.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett said that GP practices are some of the community's most valuable assets.

"We're working to assist our outer-urban, regional and rural Tasmanian GPs, to strengthen and sustain their practices," Minister Barnett said.

"These flexible grants can help GPs to offer extended hours of service, embed nurse practitioners, attract new doctors, or expand their practice with capital upgrades.

"The first grant round is expected to open by 3 August 2024, and I encourage GP practices around the State to take a look and apply.

"Our health is our wealth and as a Government we must do everything that we can to ensure Tasmanians have every opportunity they can to be healthy.

"As the Federal Labor Government continues to neglect the important role that they play in ensuring the viability of our GP practices, we are today, once again, stepping up."

Also included under our nation-leading GP Guarantee:

  1. The GP Incentive Package will include a $100,000 settlement allowance for GPs to practice in rural and regional areas of the State; and
  2. Stand up a team of 10 GPs as part of a new GP NOW Rapid Response Team.

The guidelines around applications are available on the Department of Health's website.
