Tasmanian Labor Urges Readiness for New Spirits Tourism, 27 June 2024

Tas Labor

Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs.

The Spirits project, when finally fully delivered with new port infrastructure, will add around $350 million to Tasmania's economy every year, which will be incredible for our state.

However, the project is at least five years and $500 million over budget. That is $1.75 billion in lost economic activity to an economy which is stalling and $500 million in costs added to a budget already loaded with record debt.

There is a pattern here. The Liberal Lambie Government never delivers.

But it's not just our port facilities that are not ready for a 40% increase in passengers. There is a lack of action on critical infrastructure associated with this project all over the state.

Tasmania needs upgraded caravan and camping accommodation, dump points and place to responsibly dump waste.

We must be ready to accommodate the increased number of visitors. The situation represents a critical opportunity that we cannot afford to let slip, a chance for one of our state's premier industries to support more jobs and economic activity which we desperately need to get our economy back on track.

For the sake those who work in tourism supported industries, the Liberal-Lambie Coalition Government needs to get its act together when it comes to delivering these projects.
