The Tasmanian Parliament will review Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) services in Tasmania following a motion put forward by Liberal Member for Clark, Simon Behrakis.
The Government Administration Committee B will inquire into and report on the availability and efficiency of the assessment and treatment of and support services for people with ADHD in Tasmania.
Liberal Member for Clark, Simon Behrakis, said that as a Member of Parliament he felt it a responsibility to not only speak about this but to do what he can to improve the processes and outcomes for people with ADHD in Tasmania.
"As someone who has been recently diagnosed with ADHD, I have an opportunity to shine a light on this prevalent disorder," Mr Behrakis said.
"We must ensure that the public health system provides the care and treatment needed for those with ADHD, without unnecessary delays.
"Through this inquiry, we can work together and draw on the expertise of medical professionals and the lived experiences of individuals with ADHD, to create a more accessible and supportive system.
"We must ensure that the right supports are received at the right time, from educational support to individual and family support, or medication if that is required.
"It will also provide an avenue for the thousands of other Tasmanians who have similar experiences, and are struggling with navigating the status quo to contribute, to have their stories heard.
"I sincerely thank the Members of the House of Assembly who voted in favour to allow me to pursue a matter so close to home.
"I hope this will bring about awareness and reduce stigma so that others feel comfortable to be open about their own experiences and struggles."
The inquiry follows a recent commitment as part of the Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future to deliver a new GP specialist service for children with ADHD, ensuring families can access GPs with special interests sooner.
The new service will be run through our public outpatient clinics, with two GPs with Special Interest who can diagnose and manage children with ADHD.
The Government will also bring forward legislation to the Parliament which allows GPs with the appropriate training to prescribe the necessary medication.
The final report and any recommendations to be tabled in Parliament by 31 March 2025.
