The biggest reforms in decades for the Tasmanian racing industry received final approval in the Tasmanian Parliament last night.
Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said the passage of the Racing Regulation and Integrity Bill 2024 and the Racing Regulation and Integrity (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2024 delivered an important part of the Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future in racing.
"These reforms are critically important to all three codes of racing, providing the framework to establish the new independent Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner, with comprehensive oversight of the administration and regulation of the racing industry," Minister Howlett said.
"We have delivered a key election policy commitment which incorporated the recommendations of the Monteith Review."
Minister Howlett said initial work to implement the reforms was well underway including recruitment for the key role of the new Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner.
"We now look forward to Royal Assent for the legislation so we can continue to progress this work this year," Minister Howlett said.
"We will ensure Tasracing is appropriately resourced for its operational responsibilties, including pre-race day and race day management, stewards and daily animal welfare.
"I want to rebuild trust and restore faith in racing across all three codes and see them thrive.
"That's why I brought these Bills to the Parliament as soon as possible, to deliver this important election commitment.
"The Tasmanian Government is a proud supporter of Tasmania's racing community and the passionate Tasmanians who are a part of it."
