Tasmania's Smart Meter Rollout Ahead Of Curve

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government welcomes a new Australian Energy Regulator (AER) report confirming more than three-quarters of premises now have smart meters.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said smart meters carried numerous benefits and the state is well on track for its goal to complete the roll out by the end of 2026.

"The rollout of smart meters will improve network visibility as it will provide more detailed and timely information to electricity distribution networks and consumers," Minister Duigan said.

"Smart meters eliminate the need for meter readings and estimates, preventing bill shock, and enabling customers to take control of their energy costs with almost real time access to their electricity usage.

"They also provide consumers the choice of switching to a time of use tariff, noting the Tasmanian Economic Regulator's statement that annual bills under regulated tariffs in Tasmania are the lowest in Australia.

"While Victoria was the first to complete its rollout, Tasmania has the next highest installation rate at 79 per cent at the end of August 2024, with other jurisdictions well behind.

"Our energy prices are already among the lowest in the country, but we know we need to do more to support those struggling with the cost of living challenges, and smart meters are part of this strategy.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future recognises those challenges by delivering our supercharged Renewable Energy Dividend to consumers, as well as Hydro Tasmania' new directive to ensure Tasmanians pay the lowest possible prices for electricity."
