Tassie Deserves Stocking Full Of STEM This Christmas

Tasmanian Government

With only one sleep to go until Christmas, the clock is ticking for the Federal Government to help fill a stocking full of STEM for Tasmanians.

The Tasmanian Government has been advocating for Federal support for a new STEM Precinct at the University of Tasmania in Sandy Bay.

Minister for Innovation, Science, and the Digital Economy, Madeleine Ogilvie, has called on the Federal Government to guarantee co-investment, enabling the critically important $500 million project to go ahead.

"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're committed to addressing critical skill shortages in our economy, particularly as they relate to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

"That skills gap leads to young people seeking work on the mainland and beyond, and local businesses missing out on opportunities for growth.

"We must plug that gap, and a new STEM Precinct at UTAS is an important part of the solution," Minister Ogilvie said.

The project would also bring national benefits, according to Minister Ogilvie.

"This can all move very quickly if the Federal Government sends a signal that it supports a new STEM Precinct at Sandy Bay.

"We have a national labour market in this country. Many students who study STEM at UTAS later work in that field on the mainland, so we know that the project would carry national dividends," Minister Ogilvie said.
