TCC Statement Regarding Parking Expansion Pause

Expanded paid parking across Townsville has been put on hold after councillors voted in yesterday's Special Meeting to pause the roll out of new paid parking meters.

The additional paid parking locations of Palmer St, Fulham Road Medical Precinct and The Strand, including Gregory and Mitchell streets, were included in Townsville City Council's 2024/25 budget and operational plan which was adopted earlier this year.

Additional parking meters were purchased after the budget was adopted and were planned to be introduced in 2025 to balance the needs of businesses, residents and workers while offsetting the cost of maintaining key community assets such as The Strand.

Councillors voted unanimously to halt the paid parking expansion effective immediately and to not proceed until Council is provided with sufficient evidence that there is a need and or want from the community for paid parking.
