A teenage boy has been charged after a police pursuit in Orange at the weekend.
Operation Regional Mongoose is a high-visibility police operation to tackle serious property-related crime, committed predominately by young offenders.
Officers attached to Central West Police District were patrolling Long Pine Avenue about 2am on Saturday (13 July 2024), when they saw a SUV being driven without headlights.
Police followed the vehicle to Bathurst Street where they directed the driver to stop; however, the vehicle allegedly accelerated away and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit ended when the SUV collided with a police vehicle in New Street and drove away. A boy, who was a passenger in the vehicle was arrested in Bathurst Street after he allegedly ran away.
About 2:30am, the SUV was located and a 16-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Orange Police Station.
That boy has now been charged with four offences,
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed
- Fail to comply with request or signal to stop vehicle, and
- Proceed through red traffic light.
He was given conditional bail to appear in a children's court on Thursday 18 July 2024.
The second boy was released without charge.
