The historic partnership between research universities such as Duke and the federal government has made work on life-saving treatments at American universities the envy of the world. Now that partnership is at risk as the White House has slashed and deprioritized research funding, delayed or disrupted the grant review process for new grants, and proposed a draconian cap on Facilities & Administrative costs that allow universities to support the research enterprise.
These changes will shut down clinical trials, close biomedical research labs and put support for the next generation of research scientists - and the medical advances they will make -- at risk.
The prospect of these funding cuts has served as the impetus behind the Duke Research Saves Lives campaign launched earlier this year. It features the work of Duke's researchers and the patients who benefit from their efforts.
