Temporary Bridge Reconnects Flooded Areas to Bruce

Department of Defence

The Albanese Government is providing vital assistance to communities isolated by severe rainfall and flooding in North Queensland, delivering a temporary bridge structure to support rescue efforts and better keep communities safe.

Part of the Orella Creek Bridge, connecting Townsville and Ingham, fell into floodwater on Sunday afternoon after more than 1,400 millimetres of rain fell in the area over the weekend. This particularly impacted communities between Townsville and Ingham because the Highway provides direct connectivity to emergency services and ensures the supply of communities.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is working with the Queensland authorities to work out how to safely deliver a temporary bridge structure in what continue to be challenging conditions. If feasible, the temporary bridge will be a single lane structure that will allow vehicle access. This will help residents, first responders, and flood relief workers travel and continue supporting our communities. The temporary bridge will allow some resupply efforts but will not support heavy vehicles, and governments are continuing to work together to identify solutions.

The ADF is also providing support to the state government-led response to flooding in North Queensland:

  • On 4 February 2025, four ADF helicopters began flying operations to transport Army personnel tasked with relief operations, Ergon technicians and equipment, generators and fuel, and Queensland State Emergency Service workers.
  • On 1 February 2025, Townsville's 3rd Brigade supported the Queensland Police Service to conduct door knocking throughout high-risk areas to identify residents in need of evacuation at the request of Townsville City Council.

The Albanese Government will continuing to work closely with the Queensland Government and stakeholders across the Australian Government to provide Commonwealth assistance as requested.
