Western Region Police have conducted a three-day high-visibility operation focused on preventing and disrupting crime in the state's north.
Between Tuesday 7 January 2025 and Thursday 9 January 2025, officers attached to New England Police District, Western Region Enforcement Squad and Rural Crime Prevention Team saturated Moree under Operation Surge to proactively target alleged offenders.
Operation Surge is part of Operational Regional Mongoose, which focuses on young offenders who commit break and enter offences and steal motor vehicles.
As part of Operation Surge, police arrested and charged 10 people for a total of 24 offences, and conducted:
- 20 bail compliance checks,
- 15 domestic apprehended violence order compliance checks,
- Two search warrants, and
- One firearms prohibition search.
Incidents of note include:
- On Tuesday 7 January 2025, police arrested a 44-year-old man on Alice Street, Moree. He was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged by virtue of an outstanding warrant for the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV). He appeared before Moree Local Court on Tuesday 7 January 2025, where he was granted conditional bail to appear before Taree Local Court on Tuesday 21 January 2025.
- On Wednesday 8 January 2025, police arrested a 20-year-old man on Jacaranda St, Moree. He was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with a total of 11 domestic violence related offences. He was refused bail to appear before Moree Local Court on Thursday 6 March 2025.
- On Thursday 9 January 2025, police arrested a 28-year-old man on Gwyderfield Road, Moree. He was taken to Moree Police Station and charged with enter inclosed non-agricultural lands interfere etc business, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence – armed, and larceny. He was granted conditional bail and will appear before Moree Local Court on Monday 17 February 2025.
- On Thursday 9 January 2025, police executed a search warrant at a home on Yulunga Street, Moree, and seized clothing and electronic devices that police believe will assist in ongoing investigations.
