Tenants are settling into 16 new social homes on the Sunshine Coast delivered as part of the Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan.
The 16 one-bedroom homes have been built over three levels and made accessible for older Queenslanders and people with a disability.
The site in Caloundra was previously occupied by two homes, with the department maximising the use of the land.
It follows a number of social housing projects across the coast including new homes in Yandina, Little Mountain and Beerwah as well as construction underway on projects in Nirimba and Maroochydore.
Just recently, Housing Minster Meaghan Scanlon also announced an affordable housing proposal by BHC for 90 homes in Birtinya had been lodged to go through one of the state's fast-track approval processes.
Another 100-plus homes have been greenlit to receive funding through the Miles Government's Incentivising Infill Development Fund to help pay for essential infrastructure like water, parks and roads, and get shovels in the ground sooner.
As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:
"What was once two houses in Caloundra has been turned into 16 more accessible homes for older Queenslanders and people with a disability.
"Whether it's getting more shovels in the ground and tradies on the tools to deliver our social housing Big Build, or fast-tracking approvals for even more homes – only this government is doing what matters for Queensland.
"It's a clear contrast to the LNP who cut social housing last time, and are right now blocking thousands of Queenslanders from buying their own home."
As stated by Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt:
"It's the Miles Government that has been doing what matters for the coast – with $1,300 off power bills, 20 per cent off rego and building more homes.
"I'm thrilled this site now offers 16 homes for people in our community instead of just two, but at the same time also retains a mango tree from its past, which is now an area for residents to gather.
"Importantly, this place is well-located, being close to local shops, services and public transport for our new tenants."
As stated by soon-to-be tenant, Neville Wulff:
"I'm really looking forward to living in my new unit, I love it, the layout of the complex and design, it's absolutely perfect," he said.
"I've been renting for the past few years and as an 84-year-old man living on the pension, I don't need the worry and concern about rental increases and cost of living expenses. This unit is mine! I don't have rent worries anymore."
"I'm a keen fisherman and I'm now close to Moffatt Beach, so I'm looking forward to going fishing if I want or just wandering down to the village for a coffee and watch the world go by."
"My family are helping me move and they're really happy with the unit as well. They're getting plenty of comfort from my happiness, as well as the safety and support features the complex provides."
