Tenders are being called for the replacement of the Apsley River Bridge, an important regional link to Bicheno on the Tasman Highway.
The new bridge, about five kilometres south of Bicheno, will accommodate anticipated future increases in heavy vehicles, and provide greater safety and convenience for tourists and cyclists enjoying the East Coast's many attractions.
The project is being funded through the Tasmanian Liberal Government's $40 million COVID-19 Road to Recovery package, which aims to rebuild a stronger Tasmania through increased funding for key infrastructure upgrades.
Works will include the construction of a new 90-metre concrete bridge and the realignment of about 1.4 kilometres of road to provide safer entry and exit to the bridge. The new bridge is designed to handle potential increases in heavy vehicle loading for the next 100 years.
The existing bridge was built in 1945.
Tenders close on September 23, 2020, and construction is expected to begin in the 2020-21 construction season.
