Lions Park in Earlville will undergo a $2.9 million upgrade over the next year, which will allow for the relocation of the Woree Tennis Club to the venue.
The upgrades will include the construction of four new synthetic grass tennis courts, lighting to allow for night use, and a 34-bay carpark.
The Woree Tennis club was impacted by the much-needed upgrade of the intersection at Rigg St and Windarra St, which required the removal of two of four courts at Jeff Pezzutti Park.
Foreshadowed in the Jeff Pezzutti Park Master Plan, which was endorsed by Council in 2017, the Rigg St and Windarra St intersection project was not planned to occur before 2024.
However, Council received funding from the School Transport Infrastructure Program to complete the intersection upgrade earlier.
Council worked with both the Woree and Earlville Tennis Clubs, alongside Tennis Queensland, and committed to the construction of four new tennis courts and associated infrastructure at Lions Park to allow for both clubs to use the venue concurrently.
Once the upgrade is complete, the facility will have a total of eight tennis courts, providing more opportunities to host more and higher-level tournaments.
An economic analysis has estimated that 58 local jobs (16 direct and 42 indirect) will be supported by the project over a year of delivery.
