The Finocchiaro CLP Government continues to deliver health and cost of living outcomes with nearly 1,300 eligible young Territorians receiving the free Meningococcal B vaccine since the program launched on 1 January.
Out of the 1,298 young Territorians who received the free vaccine, 1,193 infants aged between six weeks and 2 years, and 105 adolescents aged between 14 and 19 years accessed the vaccine ahead of the start of the 2025 NT School Immunisation Program.
Minister for Health Steve Edgington said there was strong interest in the free meningococcal B vaccine, and he encouraged more eligible Territory families to take part.
"It's fantastic to see such a strong uptake already in a year our government has committed to action, certainty and security," he said.
"Children are the greatest beneficiaries of vaccinations, providing certainty and security for families.
"Around 4,200 babies and 18,500 adolescents across the Territory are eligible to access the free vaccine and I hope every eligible Territory family will access this vital protection for free."
Prior to the free vaccines, Territorians were paying around $200 per vaccine, with babies under two requiring three doses and adolescents needing two doses.
Year 9 students will receive the vaccine as part of the school immunisations schedule delivered in terms one and two, while a catch-up program will be provided in schools later in the year for students in years 10, 11 and 12.
Previously, the meningococcal B vaccine was only available for free to Aboriginal children or those with specific medical conditions.
"This initiative delivers on our promise to ensure Territory families have access to vital protection against meningococcal B and to also help ease the cost of living for families," said Mr Edgington.
The CLP Government has invested $1 million to fund the program, including a two-year catch-up initiative, and committed an additional $500,000 annually to support ongoing vaccinations for infants and Year 9 students.
