Territory Vets' Supported Through Landmark MoU

NT Government

The Lawler Labor Government is delivering tailored services and support for Territory Veterans' and their families through a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This partnership is the first of its kind in the Territory, delivering permanent employment and mentoring to 20 former serving personnel and their spouse's with Ventia each year.

Ventia specialises in the management of long-term public and private assets, and the corporation employs over 500 Territorians across a range of contracts, including Defence.

The majority of employment opportunities for Territory Vets' under this new partnership will be in Defence at locations across the Territory such as Larrakeyah Barracks and RAAF Base Tindal, and will see former service personnel undertaking roles such as project managers, vehicle mechanics, admin staff and ground keepers.

This MoU directly aligns with the goals of Operative Thrive and comes as the Lawler Labor Government increases its support for the Veterans' community with a Budget of $3.1 million to deliver more opportunities like this.

On average, 250 Australian Defence Force Personnel transition out of the military while posted in the Territory each year, as such the Labor Government established Operation Thrive to improve access to employment opportunities, support health and wellbeing and keep Veterans' in the Territory.

So far it has also delivered GP veteran health training, #CheckYourMates campaigns, and a partnership between the NT Government and Soldier On to continue to enhance Soldier On's activities in the Northern Territory.

Quotes attributed Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Brent Potter:

"A key focus of the Lawler Labor Government is assisting Defence personnel and their families to adjust to civilian life, become a valued members of the community and stay in the Territory.

"Transitioning from Defence to civilian life is not easy, which is why secure employment and mentorship opportunities are so important.

"Operation Thrive was launched following the NT Defence Veterans Strategy in 2023 and today's MoU signing is a major accomplishment supported by $2.55 million investment."
