Essential safety improvements to Terry Street, Albion Park are planned for early to mid 2025.
This project continues Shellharbour City Council's commitment to improving the safety and functionality of the City's roads.
"Albion Park is a growing community, and Shellharbour City Council is committed to ensuring our roads are safe for our residents." said Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer.
"This project has been developed in consultation with the community since 2021 and has gone through multiple stages of feedback. It's great to see the project is finally underway thanks to funding from NSW Government."
The safety improvements are being funded with $643,000 from the NSW Government's Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.
The Towards Zero Safer Roads Program is a road safety infrastructure and speed management treatment program to deliver sustainable and long-term reductions in road trauma through upgrades of the existing NSW road network.
Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said:
"The NSW Government is proud to be supporting Shellharbour City Council by investing in projects that help make our local roads safer.
"Improvements set to be made to Terry Street will deliver better pedestrian safety and smoother journeys for motorists."
The improvement works at Terry Street, Albion Park will be completed in one stage, with traffic control in place to help ease any associated disruptions to current use of the road.
The development of this project comes after multiple stages of community feedback to help shape the design.
Terry Street is classified as a Regional Collector Road, connecting Jamberoo and Albion Park.
The section between Wiley Street and Simpson Parade has been subject to several recorded crashes in recent years and is also subject to moderate-high pedestrian demand to cross the street.
Considering these factors, the improvements to Terry Street under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program include:
- The installation of a roundabout at T-intersection of Terry Street and Hughes Drive
- Implementation of one-way traffic flow within the shopping car park
- Installation of a raised pedestrian crossing at Wiley Street
- Constructing new infrastructure to be disability compliant
- Installing shared use path links to each of the upgraded crossing points
- Implementing left turn only on some side roads
- Relocating the existing bus shelter.
