Thank Volunteer Day Grant recipients announced 19 October

  • Grants awarded to celebrate volunteers on WA's Thank a Volunteer Day
  • Funding from the Cook Government will allow organisations to show their appreciation of volunteers through events or activities
  • WA Thank a Volunteer Day is held on 5 December each year

Community organisations and local government authorities across Western Australia have been funded a total of $70,000 by the Cook Government to celebrate Thank a Volunteer Day 2023.

Volunteering Minister Don Punch today announced the 72 successful grant recipients that will receive funding as part of the Department of Communities' Thank a Volunteer Day Grants Program.

The United Nations designated 5 December as International Volunteer Day in 1985. In Western Australia it is known as Thank a Volunteer Day.

The Thank a Volunteer Day Grants Program enables organisations across Western Australia to celebrate their volunteers through events or activities such as award ceremonies, workshops, seminars, morning or afternoon teas, and excursions.

The recognition day also provides organisations with an opportunity to raise public awareness of the contributions of volunteers in their community.

Successful events are encouraged to collaborate with other volunteer organisations and develop local partnerships to increase the volunteer recognition and connection across local communities.

Activities and events funded for WA Thank a Volunteer Day 2023 include a Thank a Volunteer Day Cruise for Shire of Derby and West Kimberley volunteers, a lawn bowling afternoon for volunteers at the Nannup Community Resource Centre and a BBQ, live music and awards ceremony to celebrate the efforts of all the volunteers at the Ellenbrook Cultural Foundation.

"Volunteers are the glue that keep many communities together and it's fantastic to come together at the end of the year and celebrate all that they have achieved.

"The Cook Labor Government is thankful to all the volunteers across Western Australia that give their time and energy to make our State such a great place to live."
