The City of Launceston has this week invited construction firms to be part of an Early Contractor Involvement process for the redevelopment of the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre complex.
A Development Application for the $30m project is expected to be advertised in coming weeks, and the Council intends for the works to take place in 2026. City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the start of construction was planned for early 2026 and it would be important to meet this deadline.
"We're really keen to ensure that this redevelopment will be as smooth as possible, so we've decided to launch an Early Contractor Involvement process," Mayor Garwood said.
"Essentially this involves inviting local construction firms to formally collaborate on the project, to contribute to the final design, and to provide direct input into the construction timeframes.
"This will help us meet our goal of seeing construction underway in early 2026 and completing it as soon as possible.
"This redevelopment is aimed at improving both the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre for patrons, performers, hirers and staff by making the complex more accessible and compliant with contemporary building standards.
"Additionally, the total seating capacity of the Earl Arts Centre will be increased.
"Renowned architectural firm Lovell Chen has been appointed to design the infrastructure upgrades that are required, in collaboration and consultation with Launceston's theatre community.
"This is one of the most exciting projects on the City of Launceston's books at the moment, along with our transformational redevelopment of the historic Albert Hall, and will help us ensure this important community facility remains fit for purpose for new generations of theatre lovers.
"Our future is exciting, involving some bold and courageous projects as shown by this project — demonstrating we're a council committed to delivering our strategic vision."
Theatre North General Manager Amanda Shepherd said the theatre community was excited about the project.
"As the long-term tenant and manager of the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre, Theatre North is excited and inspired by Lovell Chen's architectural vision, and by Council's firm commitment to a thriving future for our theatres," Ms Shepherd said.
"Council's collaborative community consultation has been extremely beneficial to date, and the Early Contractor Involvement is the next step in the process."
