Theft charge appeal, Norman Gardens

Police are seeking public assistance as part of the investigation into the violent theft of a vehicle at Norman Gardens on Saturday June 4.

Initial investigations indicate that just before 9pm a red Toyota Echo was stationary at a red light on Farm Street and Yaamba Road, when the 45-year-old driver was approached by a group of people.

The Parkhurst man pulled into a Yaamba Road carpark where the group assaulted him, pulled him from the vehicle and drove away in the Toyota.

It is alleged at approximately 11.50am the following day (Sunday June 5) the vehicle was reversed into a marked police vehicle on Randwick Street in Berserker, before leaving the scene. An officer was in the vehicle at the time and suffered minor injuries.

The vehicle was subsequently located abandoned near the Bruce Highway in Marmor.

Investigations led police to arrest a 28-year-old Park Avenue man yesterday (June 6).

He has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a vehicle, driver failed to stop at incident, wilful damage of police property, obstruct police and breach of bail. He is expected to appear before Rockhampton Magistrate Court today (June 7).

Rockhampton detectives would like to speak to anyone who has relevant information about this incident or dash cam footage from the vicinity of the Yaamba Road carpark at approximately 9pm.

Investigations are ongoing.
