Residents are reminded to think twice before renovating their homes during Asbestos Awareness Week, which begins today.
Running until Sunday 28 November 2021, Asbestos Awareness Week aims to remind home renovators and tradespeople about the danger of asbestos. This year's campaign is split into three parts. They include:
- Get in the know - find out whether your home was built or renovated before 1990. Asbestos was used in thousands of building materials before 1990;
- Go slow - don't damage or disturb asbestos materials; and
- Get a pro - know your limits. Get a licensed asbestos professional to give you advice on where asbestos is located and how to manage or remove it.
Asbestos is still present in millions of homes, as well as public and commercial buildings across Australia.
Whether it is DIYers doing small or large jobs around the house, or tradies on a residential worksite, the Think Twice About Asbestos campaign reminds them of the dangers of damaged, disturbed or deteriorated asbestos.
Tradespeople also need to call a licensed asbestos professional if they don't have the equipment, skills, training or license to handle asbestos.
