If you toss your groceries into the refrigerator without a second thought, you might want to remember this chef's advice in future
Unless you're hyper-organised and very particular about the way you store groceries in your fridge, you've probably been guilty of sticking a carton of milk on the top shelf when you've run out of room.
Or how about a pack of bacon? Or some chicken breasts?
Well apparently this is the worst place you could choose - and it could end up making you poorly.
Chef Daniel Norton explained to Tech Insider that the temperature isn't constant in all areas of the fridge.
The shelves higher up tend to be slightly warmer, so it's best to store what are known as 'high risk' foods such as milk and raw meat - basically, anything that you wouldn't leave out of the fridge for very long - in the cooler places.
Milk and meat should be kept on the lower shelves or near the back of the fridge, according to Norton.
That way, there is less risk of them growing bacteria which could be potentially harmful when you consume the food or drink.
And that's not the only fridge warning you should be aware of.
In March we shared the caution on the Food Standards Agency's website which warns never to store potatoes in the fridge.
Apparently it's the one food we should never refrigerate. Why? Because scientists believe the cold temperatures can convert the starch in the potato to sugar.
When baked or fried, these sugars then combine with amino acids to produce the chemical acrylamide, which is thought to be harmful and has been linked to cancer.
