Three Local Playgrounds Upgraded

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is officially opening three upgraded playgrounds as part of the annual Playground Revitalisation program.

Playgrounds at Clarke Crescent, Rapid Creek; McMillans Green Belt, Anula; and Easther Park, Coconut Grove now feature new play equipment, rubber soft fall surfaces and artificial shade.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the upgrades contributed to making Darwin a safe, liveable and healthy city.

"Investing in our playgrounds is one way we can support our community members to become more active and healthier," Mr Vatskalis said.

"Play is essential for the development of all children and is critical for building physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills.

"Quality play spaces bring the community together and I look forward to seeing residents and visitors enjoying these new pieces of equipment.

"We engaged with the Darwin community to develop our Play Space Strategy, which guides the type of equipment and features we consider for the many play spaces across the city.

"The community told us they wanted quality over quantity as well as play spaces that have heat mitigation strategies and increased shade in place, and these upgraded playgrounds deliver that," he said.

There are 155 play spaces across Darwin, including 121 playgrounds, 16 exercise stations, one skate park and an obstacle course.

As part of the Play Space Strategy, City of Darwin audited 125 parks with playgrounds with the results guiding the installation, replacement and rationalisation of playgrounds, outdoor exercising stations and other recreational assets across the municipality.
