Another milestone has been achieved for the Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass project, with the new inbound lanes opening to traffic this week, marking 70% completion for the project.
The inbound lanes of Tiger Brennan Drive heading towards Darwin are now connected to the existing lanes, allowing road users to utilise both the inbound and outbound lanes under the bridge which carries Berrimah Road over Tiger Brennan Drive.
At the western end of the new works, detour lanes have been constructed to allow final tie in of the new inbound lanes to the existing where a significant level difference existed.
The $165 million dollar project jointly funded by the Australian Government and Northern Territory Government will improve road safety outcomes, reduce traffic delays during peak hours and increase the traffic flow for freight connectivity.
Over 20,000 Territorians travel Tiger Brennan Drive every day, with this significant project making the road safer.
The project is being delivered by local company, Sitzler, and supported by a host of local subcontractors and suppliers. To date over 210 local businesses have been involved in this significant project with more than 1,350 workers involved, including 161 indigenous workers and 32 apprentices and trainees.
The next milestone for the project will be the completion of the Tiger Brennan Drive outbound on and off ramps and the connection of the northern end of Berrimah Road, which is anticipated to open to traffic in September 2024.
The Lawler Labor Government is providing $2.3 billion in Budget 2024 for Territory transport infrastructure, with the Federal Government recently announcing an additional $480 million budget investment in the Territory, which will pave the way for working opportunities and increased road safety across the Territory.
The overall project is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2024.
