TIME Lists Wukalina Walk Among 2024 World's Best Places

Jeremy Rockliff, Minister for Tourism and Hospitality

One of the world's most popular media outlets, TIME magazine, has included Tasmania's wukalina Walk in its list of World's Greatest Places for 2024.

This is the first time Tasmania has made the list, which is compiled annually by TIME's editors and correspondents from around the world, who select the most desirable travel destinations and experiences to explore, stay and visit from across the globe.

Premier and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Jeremy Rockliff congratulated wukalina Walk for being recognised by TIME as one of the world's greatest places.

"This is an incredible achievement for wukalina Walk and Tasmania," Premier Rockliff said.

"It is also important recognition for the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and the work wukalina Walk are doing to connect guests with Aboriginal history, culture and Country."

The multi-day walk, led by Aboriginal guides, takes guests across wukalina (Mt William National Park) and larapuna (Bay of Fires) and has won many awards including winning GOLD at the 2023 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Darwin last year.

Tasmanian palawa Elder and founder of wukalina Walk, Clyde Mansell, said sharing our stories and our history on cultural homeland is an integral part of the experience.

"It also allows us to increase employment, involve our young people and contribute to our self-determination, by creating more opportunities for the palawa community," Mansell said.

"We've had comments over the years where guests have said it's changed their lives and their whole thinking about how they should relate to Aboriginal people."

International visitation is an important strategic focus for Tourism Tasmania and the economic contribution from these visitors is critical to Tasmania's tourism industry.

Tasmania's recognition in this key international media publication helps reach new audiences.

Premier Rockliff said the TIME Magazine list is a trusted source of travel inspiration for many global travellers.

"The tourism industry is one of our State's success stories and we have no doubt TIME Magazine will influence readers to come and visit Tasmania," Premier Rockliff said.

"Our Government will continue to sustainably grow the tourism sector through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, with an additional $12 million committed to delivering the Visitor Economy Strategy."

TIME Magazine have an audience reach of more than 120 million people worldwide via TIME's print magazine, website and socials.
