For many, the holiday season is a joyful time for family, celebration, and togetherness. But for others, it can be a time of quiet reflection, especially for those grieving the loss of loved ones.
This holiday, which centres around family and connection, can intensify feelings of loneliness and sadness for those who are mourning. While the world celebrates, some may find comfort in remembering loved ones through small acts like lighting a candle or sharing memories. We recognise that the holdiay season is a time for joy and a deeply personal period for honouring those who are no longer with us.
Throughout palliative care we endorse a holistic concept called a 'Palliative Approach', the prioritisation of quality and recognition of how life is finite. This approach is emphasised especially when faced with a life limiting illness, and focuses on need, comfort, dignity, emotional needs and personal value for those faced with life limiting illness.
Rather than concentrating on prolonging life at all costs, palliative care ensures that individuals can live their remaining time in a way that is meaningful to them, whether through spending time with loved ones or simply enjoying everyday moments.
This approach resonates particularly during the holidays when we reflect on life's limitations. It teaches that life's worth isn't measured by how long we live, but by how we live – finding peace, comfort, and connection even in the face of loss.
This holiday season, prioritise those that you hold dearest, cherish every moment, and most importantly – have fun!
