The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has moved to lean forward as rain has intensified across the region.
TLDMG Chair Andrew Robinson said moving to lean forward meant the group was operationally ready and the Local Disaster Coordination Centre was operational.
"Advice from the Bureau of Meteorology has indicated that Townsville will continue to receive heavy rain throughout the rest of today and into the weekend," Cr Robinson said.
"What this means for our community is that there is localised flooding and this flooding will continue into the weekend.
"We need residents to stay calm, be alert and be prepared. Make sure you know where your emergency kit is, make sure it is adequately stocked, and make sure you have a plan in case you need to leave your home if weather gets worse.
"It is very important that residents do not drive through floodwaters. If it's flooded, forget it. Do not put your life at risk."
Low-lying and flood prone areas across Townsville are experiencing localised flooding as rain continues. Residents should not drive through flood water.
"Make sure you're speaking with your friends, family and neighbours. Make a plan to go to a friend or family member's house if you need to evacuate your home due to flooding," Cr Robinson said.
