TLDMG Stands Down As Rain Eases

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) is standing down as the threat from rain and flooding has reduced overnight.

The TLDMG is advising that rainfall has eased and river levels are dropping.

TLDMG Chair Andrew Robinson said despite reduced rainfall, some areas may still have localised flooding today and tomorrow.

"Thankfully the rain has slowed down overnight, reducing the threat of flooding across Townsville, but we still need residents to remain flood safe," Cr Robinson said.

"Continue to monitor conditions, as some areas could still have localised flooding. Residents should also continue to be careful on the roads and obey road closure signs. Remember, if it's flooded, forget it.

"Do not enter floodwaters. There may be rubbish or other debris on the ground or in remaining floodwater, and spiders, rats and snakes may have moved inside buildings to escape the rain.

"If your home or businesses has been flooded, check for building damage before you go inside, have all electrical and gas equipment professionally tested before use, and protect your health and safety by using appropriate personal protective equipment."

Cr Robinson said last night was a timely reminder that all Townsville residents needed to be prepared for severe weather.

"We are constantly reminding Townsville locals to get ready, to have a plan, and to be prepared in case we receive severe weather," he said.

"This rain and flooding event is a timely reminder of how important it is to take those warnings seriously. Every household must have a plan and an emergency kit, and that plan must include an alternate place to shelter if you need to leave your home and a plan for your pets.

"If you don't have a plan in place, let this event be the nudge you need to talk to your family and friends, make a plan and be as prepared as possible for a disaster."
