Todays Fish Waste Can Become Tomorrows Nutritious Food

Technical University of Denmark

Of the more than five million tonnes of fish processed annually in the European fishing industry, perhaps three million tonnes today end up as animal feed or unused waste. Carcasses with fish meat residues on them, head, tail, and entrails—also called side streams—are often mixed together and sent directly to fishmeal producers or disposed of as waste for a high fee.

But it does not have to be that way. On the contrary, there is money to be made from also exploiting these parts of the fish for valuable human food.
