Tony McGrane Memorial Scholarship Fund Luncheon

Gilgandra Shire Council (Council) will be hosting a luncheon to honour Tony McGrane and raise funds towards the Charles Sturt University (CSU) Tony McGrane Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The luncheon will be held at the Coo-ee Heritage and Visitor Information Centre (CHC) on Sunday, 15 September 2024 commencing from 12:00pm.

Chairperson for this milestone event, Mayor, Cr Doug Batten says,

"This event will serve as an occasion to honour the 20th anniversary of Tony McGrane's passing, celebrate his life and acknowledge his contributions to CSU, Local Governments and community. We would like to thank our generous sponsors Dubbo City & Gilgandra Toyota, for their support and enthusiasm in being a part of this luncheon."

Adding,

"We look forward to celebrating the life of Tony McGrane with an alternate drop sit down lunch and dessert prepared by local vendors, Caffeinity Coffee & Wine Co, whilst also raising funds for the Tony McGrane Memorial Scholarship Fund that are necessary to keep supporting our regional students with the costs associated with attending University."

This luncheon is a paid ticket event, with limited seating. The ticket cost of $150 includes a two-course lunch and refreshments, as well as a donation towards the Tony McGrane Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship reflects the enthusiasm and foresight of Tony McGrane and the role he played in establishing the CSU, Dubbo Campus. Twenty-three scholarships have been provided since the scholarship launched in 2010, with a further two being allocated this year.

Council's General Manager and Secretary for this event, David Neeves says

"Council is pleased to play a part in honouring Tony McGrane, who was such an integral part of our immediate and wider community, especially on such a special occasion. We hope that the local community will join us in this. We also look forward to welcoming the Honourable Troy Grant back to the Gilgandra Region, his expansive career and connections with Tony McGrane will add a personal layer to his role on the day."

The Honourable Troy Grant, guest speaker, joined the NSW Police Force in 1988, and was posted to Gilgandra in April 1989, it was then he got to know Tony McGrane, who was the Gilgandra Shire President and Royal Hotel owner at the time. Troy served within the NSW Cabinet as Minister for Hospitality Gaming & Racing and Minister for the Arts, to then be elected Leader of the NSW Nationals and sworn in as the 17th Deputy Premier of NSW and youngest man to hold the role.
