World Wetlands Day occurred on Sunday 2 February 2020. It aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet.
This year's theme focused on the role of wetlands in biodiversity.
On Sunday 2 February, Boneo Park teamed up with Mornington Peninsula Shire, Birdlife Australia, Western Port Biosphere, Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network, Trust for Nature, Bunurong Land Council and Melbourne Water to celebrate the important role of the Tootgarook Wetland in preserving biodiversity.
The event was a great success providing a fun day out for many families. There was something for everyone to enjoy, like pond dipping, a puppet show a talk from well known 'Birdo' Sean Dooley and guided tours around the Tootgarook Wetland.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said "World Wetlands Day was a great opportunity to celebrate the key role of Tootgarook Wetland as a critical habitat for birds and other animals and highlight the need to protect these valuable ecosystems. My family and I had a great time exploring the Wetlands on the day".
Encompassing more than 300 hectares, Tootgarook Wetland forms part of the internationally recognised Western Port Biosphere. It is a hidden refuge of biodiversity on the southern Peninsula, home to more than 240 indigenous plant species and a variety of fauna, including internationally significant birdlife such as the endangered Australasian Bittern.
The majority of this wetland is situated within Boneo Park, whose owners, the McNaught family, work with Trust for Nature to actively preserve 200 hectares of wetland, woodland and grassland.
This wetland is a bird lovers paradise, providing habitat for 160 bird species. More than 10 kilometres of trails wind through the property, offering opportunities for walkers, birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers to experience this unique paradise.
Tootgarook Wetland also holds cultural significance to the Bunurong/BoonWurrung people. In recognition of this, Bunurong Land Council held a smoking ceremony and a walk and talk session
