Top Scientists Meet at UH: Climate Change & Health

As deadly wildfires rage in California, the University of Houston is bringing together some of the country's leading environmental, engineering and health scientists and researchers for the 2025 Climate Health Frontiers Symposium, a two-day discussion about the impact of climate change on public health.

Key Takeaways

  • What: 2025 Climate Health Frontiers Symposium
  • When: Thursday, Jan. 16 – Friday, Jan. 17
  • Where: The Hilton University of Houston, 4450 University Drive, Houston, TX 77004

"Recent extreme weather events have taught us the importance of climate impacts on health,  especially for vulnerable populations," said Hanadi Rifai, Moores professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Hurricane Resilience Research Institute at UH. "We need to be prepared and adapt to these extremes that could get much worse, whether it is flooding, winter storms or extreme heat."

The symposium, which aims to promote a holistic climate health approach that integrates social, health, economic, environmental, policy and climate science perspectives, will shed light on the urgent need for collaborative action to safeguard the health of our communities and protect vulnerable populations from the far-reaching effects of a changing climate.

"Climate change is not a distant threat; it is already reshaping public health outcomes across the globe," said Bettina Beech, clinical professor of population health at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and chief population health officer at UH. "As we face increasingly frequent and intense natural disasters, it is crucial that we prioritize preparedness and resilience in our health care systems."
