Tourism Council WA has welcomed WA Labor's $500,000 election commitment for future planning of a new purpose-built passenger terminal for Broome.
Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the new infrastructure would drive better experiences and services for cruise ship passengers.
"A purpose-built passenger terminal will enhance the overall visitor experience from arrival in Broome, but also increase capacity and bring additional visitors who can have a better experience," Mr Hall said.
The Broome Port's First Point of Entry status has enabled additional cruise ship visits and is anticipated to welcome 75 to 149 additional cruise visits to the Port each season.
"The First Point of Entry status sets Broome and WA as the starting point for international cruises around Australia, rather than the east coast," Mr Hall said.
Mr Hall said cruise tourism in Western Australia generated $385 million in economic value last financial year.
"Western Australia has the longest and greatest coastline in Australia, and an upgraded facility would see marine and nature-based tourism boom in WA," Mr Hall said.
Mr Hall said the additional cruise ship passengers would discover the wonderful experiences Broome has to offer, including its renowned pearling industry and popular beach camel rides.
"The increased visitation will also drive demand for local tours, experiences and accommodation creating economic activity and generating jobs across the region," Mr Hall said.
Mr Hall said cruise ship passengers disembarking in Broome would have the opportunity to travel down the WA coast, from Exmouth to Geraldton down to Fremantle and Margaret River.
