  • Ms Turnbull a key part of State's strong tourism recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic

The State Government has today thanked Tourism WA managing director Carolyn Turnbull for her contribution to tourism in Western Australia, having played a major role in the State's strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Turnbull has announced she is leaving the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) to pursue new opportunities.

Under Ms Turnbull's leadership, Tourism WA has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of Western Australia's new global tourism brand Walking on a Dream, the resumption or launch of nonstop flights between 19 international destinations and securing major exclusive events such as Coldplay and the WWE.

These initiatives were undoubtedly pivotal in contributing to WA's economy and achieving a record $17.7 billion in visitor spend last year.

JTSI will undertake an extensive search for its new managing director shortly.

In the interim, Tourism WA executive director, strategy and engagement Stephanie Underwood will act in the role of managing director.

Ms Turnbull's final day at Tourism WA will be Friday, 10 May.

As stated by Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti:

"On behalf of the State Government, I'd like to thank Carolyn for her service, dedication and leadership over the past two and a half years.

"Carolyn has played a huge role in steering Western Australian tourism out of the pandemic and overseen some major achievements for Tourism WA and the State, including reconnecting WA with the world post-pandemic through direct flights, launching our new global tourism brand and of course, securing major blockbuster events.

"We wish Carolyn all the best for her future endeavours and welcome Stephanie Underwood to the role in the interim."
