The most used sports precinct in Hobart is set to receive upgrades to allow for greater capacity following a $1.5 million investment by the Tasmanian Government.
Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, said he was pleased to announce that Stage 1 of the New Town Sports Precinct Project had commenced with upgrades to the netball courts at Creek Road.
"The New Town Sports Precinct is the home of several sports clubs, including the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre and New Town District Cricket Club, and there is currently very limited capacity for most sports to accommodate growth in participation numbers," Minister Duigan said.
"The Governments investment of $1 million will be used to convert a bowling green into two additional floodlit netball courts, including fencing, synthetic grass surrounds, and sun protection on existing bowling greens.
Further funding of $500,000 has also enabled the completion of a detailed precinct plan, based on the 2019 New Town Sports Precinct Master Plan.
Liberal Member for Clark, Simon Behrakis said the facility is much-loved.
"These upgrades will receive widespread support from our community and sports clubs, and ensure greater accessibility to participation in sports," Mr Behrakis said.
"This will future-proof the site, and I cannot wait to see its use increase.
"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, our government is backing in healthier communities and investing in community sporting facilities right across the state."
Construction is expected to commence in February.
