Dogs at Tamworth's Paws for Life Animal Shelter can soon expect to have some new entertainment as they patiently wait for their fur-ever homes.
Staff will be running a Toy Drive at this Sunday's A Gala Day for Dogs at Bicentennial Park from 9am till 1pm. Residents and visitors attending the event can donate dog toys for those dogs waiting for adoption.
Tamworth Regional Council Team Leader Companion Animals, Amber Johnston, said it is important to keep the dogs happy and entertained during their time at the shelter.
"We often find dogs can be quite unsure when they initially arrive so it's always nice to be able to give them something they can play with as they adjust to their new surroundings," she said.
"The Toy Drive is a great way to provide entertainment for the dogs when we and our valued volunteers aren't there."
Sunday's Gala Day aims to raise awareness around responsible pet ownership, supporting owners by connecting them with local services and organisations, something Tamworth Regional Council Director of Liveable Communities, Gina Vereker, hopes will mean less dogs ending up in pounds and shelters.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for owners to talk about microchipping, vaccination, and obedience with our incredible local services and organisations, as well as other pet owners," she said.
"By creating these connections and providing access to resources, we can create a community where every pet is loved and valued, reducing the number of lost and abandoned dogs and ensuring responsible ownership for years to come."
The day will also showcase some of the region's most doted-on dogs as they take part in competitions, a dog parade, an agility course and the chance to visit some pooch-themed stalls! There will be plenty of food and drink options available for owners to purchase too, including a barbecue run by the Animal Welfare League.
The event is free and open to everyone to come along, weather you bring your dog or not. Dogs must be on a leash at all times and owners must pick up after them.
