The Stonnington City Council resolved on Monday 16 December 2024 to discontinue its Trade Waste Service, effective 1 March 2025, and to reinvest savings into an even better street cleaning service.
Many commercial waste service providers cater for business waste collection needs, and Council will work with the small number of affected businesses to assist them to engage an alternative waste service provider in good time. This will not impact Council's kerbside waste collection service for residents.
We know that our residents have a strong desire for more street cleaning services to maintain amenity and safety through the city, specifically in relation to the annual leaf fall season. This peaks over the four months April to July each year. Council has therefore resolved to redirect a portion of the savings from the Trade Waste Service discontinuation towards resourcing for street cleaning during the 4-month peak of leaf fall.
This will mean more sweepers and staff in the field cleaning our streets over the months April – July. This boost in resources will improve Council's capacity to manage peak leaf fall season, improve safety and amenity and meet our community's priorities.
Cr Melina Sehr, Mayor of Stonnington, noted that "Council is always looking for ways to adapt our services to best meet the needs of our community, while also making important cost savings. We have listened to feedback and are confident that this change will be a welcome uplift for our residents."
