Lismore area heavy vehicle access
Heavy vehicles are now able to travel from Sydney to Brisbane via an alternative route to gain access to isolated communities.
The detour is available for up to 26 metre GML B-Doubles.
For vehicles travelling from Sydney/Newcastle to Brisbane, your best route is inland via the New England Highway.
If you are travelling from Grafton to Brisbane, the Gwydir Highway, New England Highway or Summerland Way are the best options.
For access to Northern NSW communities (Grafton, Casino and Lismore) the best route is detailed below;
- Grafton to Casino (Summerland Way)
Northbound
- From Casino continue on the Summerland Way to Cedar Point
- At Cedar point turn right onto Bentley Road, which becomes Kyogle Road which becomes Casino Street
- At Lismore, continue along the Bruxner Highway to Alstonville
- Then use Teven Road, Tintenbar Road and Tamarind Drive
- Enter the M1 at the Tintenbar interchange
Southbound
- Exit the M1 at the Tintenbar interchange
- Use Tamarind Drive, Tintenbar Road and Teven Road
- At Altstonville use the Bruxner Highway to Lismore
- Use Casino Street, WHICH BECOMES Kyogle Road, which becomes Bentley Road
- Turn left onto Summerland Way
There is an 80km/h maximum speed limit along this route for heavy vehicles. Heavy vehicles are asked to use UHF29 to communicate along this route.

Northern NSW
Pacific Highway has opened from QLD border to Ballina. The highway remains closed from Ballina to South of Grafton. Only heavy vehicles servicing the areas north of Ballina including in and around Lismore and Byron Bay are being given access. All other heavy vehicles are asked not queue at Chinderah as this is making access for essential vehicles difficult.
The Gwydir Highway from Grafton to Glen Innes is opened.
Southern NSW
Princes Highway has been affected between Gerringong and Kiama.
Illawarra Highway is closed at Macquarie Pass.
Heavy Vehicle Inspection Stations
The Tweed Heads and Lismore Heavy Vehicle Inspection stations have been closed due to the ongoing weather event. These closures are impacting heavy vehicle registration inspections. To rebook your inspection, please visit our online portal call us on 1300 364 847 or visit a Service Centre.
Bulli Pass Closed
The Princes Highway on Bulli Pass is closed in both directions due a landslide. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Motorists can use the M1 Princes Motorway and Memorial Drive or Lawrence Hargrave Drive as an alternative route. Crews are on site working to clear the landslide and stabilise the area.
Ballina Road has reopened at Lismore but other roads remain closed in the Lismore CBD, including Dawson Street.
Motorists in the state's north are still advised to take extreme care and avoid non-essential travel in flooded areas.
Major road closures remain in place, including:
- Glenugie to Tintenbar: The M1 Pacific Motorway and Pacific Highway is closed in both directions.
- West Ballina to Uralba: Bruxner Highway is closed and between Sandilands and Malanganee also at South Lismore between Caniaba Road and Elliott Road.
- South Grafton to Clarenza: Big River Way is closed.
- Big River Way is also closed at Tyndale.
- Thora to Dorrigo Mountain: Waterfall Way is closed due to a landslide.
Many other local roads are closed, with motorists urged to check local council pages and social media sites for updates.
Motorists are reminded to never drive through floodwater, follow the directions of emergency services and take extreme care as conditions are changing quickly.
