Transforming Great Hall

An update on the project to renovate one of Imperial's most iconic spaces.

"We're investing in spaces that reflect Imperial's ambition, values and day-to-day needs."

Construction is now underway on the redevelopment of the Great Hall — a major project transforming one of Imperial's most iconic and versatile spaces in South Kensington.

Built in the late 1960s and opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969, the Great Hall has long been a venue for Imperial's biggest moments — from graduation ceremonies and student celebrations to performances by legendary musicians and lectures by leading thinkers.

The redevelopment will modernise the space while preserving its central role in Imperial life. When not in use for large-scale lectures and major events, the Great Hall will be reconfigurable into three individual lecture theatres with retractable seating and high-spec AV systems. This flexibility will support growing teaching needs while maintaining the Great Hall's capacity for full events.

The project is a key part of Imperial's South Kensington Redevelopment programme —a bold transformation for Imperial, guided by the Great Environment pillar of the Enabling roadmap. This long-term initiative will create world-class physical environments that support discovery, learning and innovation; collaboration and community; and a sustainable, net zero future which supports Imperial's Science For Humanity mission.

Accessibility and sustainability are central to the scheme. The redesigned Great Hall will include a new lift, accessible stage and toilets, hearing loops, and a layout that is consistent with the best modern teaching standards. The works will use reclaimed materials and energy-efficient systems to reduce environmental impact, with a BREEAM refurbishment assessment ensuring the highest sustainability credentials.

The surrounding areas of the Sherfield Building are also being improved to ease congestion and increase natural light, with refurbished walkways, breakout spaces and circulation routes.

Patrick Marsh, Chief Property Officer, said:

"We're investing in spaces that reflect Imperial's ambition, values and day-to-day needs. This redevelopment safeguards the future of an iconic and much-loved venue and gives us a modern, adaptable facility ready for the decades ahead."

Imperial recognises the importance of minimising disruption during construction. The project team is working closely with departments and stakeholders to reduce impact wherever possible. Major works are being scheduled outside term time, with clear signposting and communication to help staff, students and visitors navigate the area safely. Noise and dust control measures are in place, and contractors will access the site via a dedicated route.
