The Sunshine Coast is thriving and ratepayers' contribution through the Transport Levy is playing a pivotal role in funding innovative and practical solutions to reduce car dependence and improve connectivity.
Sunshine Coast Council Strong Community Portfolio Councillor Taylor Bunnag said the region was one of Australia's most car-dependent and one of the fastest-growing.
"The Transport Levy 2023-24 Annual Report shows how, through your rates payment, you are making a tangible difference to how we live and protect our unique lifestyle here on the Sunshine Coast," Cr Bunnag said.
"From supporting programs that encourage kids to bike to school safely, to providing transport services for seniors, and planning for future public transport projects, the Levy is all about creating a smarter, healthier and more sustainable community."
During the 2023-24 financial year the Transport Levy was set at $47 per rateable property and raised $7.2 million dollars.
Fellow Strong Community Portfolio Councillor David Law emphasised the importance of the funding.
"To prepare for our growth, help combat traffic congestion and protect our enviable lifestyle, Council is implementing travel change programs and working on finding other solutions," Cr Law said.
"This vital funding went to key projects and programs that enhance our community's connectivity as well as support changes to travel choices and sustainability," Cr Law said.
Some key projects include:
Empowering Our Youth: The RideScore Active Schools Program, supports and encourages our primary school children to ride safely to school, promoting healthy habits and reducing traffic congestion.
Supporting Seniors: Services like Flexilink and Council Link provide essential transport options for seniors, making it easier for them to access shopping centres and medical appointments.
Encouraging Active Lifestyles: Investments in pedestrian paths and crossings make walking and riding safer and more accessible, fostering a healthier community.
Reducing Car Dependence: The ThinkChange program helps residents rethink their travel habits, encouraging the use of public and active transport and reducing the number of car trips.
Future-Proofing Public Transport: The Levy supports planning and advocacy for major public transport projects, ensuring our region is ready for future growth.
