Trash To Treasure Set To Turn Waste Into Wonder

The Cairns community is invited to join the annual Trash to Treasure event this Saturday (10 August) from 9am to 1pm, at the Buy Back Shop in Portsmith.

This popular event, organised by Cairns Regional Council, aims to promote waste reduction and sustainability by encouraging residents to rethink their waste and discover innovative ways to repurpose and reuse unwanted items.

This year, there's even a competitive element to the day, as visitors will be able to vote for their favourite entrant in the Council's School and Early Learning Centre Reuse, Rethink, Repurpose competition.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden emphasised the importance of community participation in sustainability initiatives.

"Events like Trash to Treasure are vital for fostering a culture of sustainability in Cairns," Cr Eden said.

"By coming together to learn and share innovative ways to reduce waste, we are taking significant steps towards a greener, more sustainable future for our city.

"We are also very excited to see the outcome of the Council's regional Schools and Early Learning Centre waste reuse competition."

The Trash to Treasure event promises a fun-filled day for all ages, featuring workshops, giveaways, entertainment, and stalls that showcase creative methods to transform trash into treasure.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn practical skills for repurposing household items, reducing waste, and contributing to a more sustainable future for Cairns.

"Cairns is known for its natural beauty, and it's our responsibility to protect and preserve it," Cr Eden said.

"Through creative and practical approaches to waste reduction, we can ensure that our community remains vibrant and sustainable for generations to come."

Cairns Regional Council invites everyone to be part of this exciting event and to join the movement towards a more sustainable future. Together, we can turn trash into treasure and make a positive impact on our environment.
