We are deeply saddened at the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, died on Friday 9 April, aged 99.

The Duke of Edinburgh visited the University on many occasions, meeting students and staff at Durham Castle and our Queen's Campus in Stockton. In 1951, His Royal Highness was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law.

Prince Philip's most recent visit to the University was in 2012, as part of The Queen's 60th anniversary Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK, when they visited Durham Castle and had lunch with dignitaries and students.

Professor Stuart Corbridge, our Vice-Chancellor, said: "Our community is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family at this time."
