TruckSafe Unveils New Safety Management Systems

They're here! The 2024 TruckSafe safety management systems (SMS) are now available.

TruckSafe is the Australian Trucking Association's business and risk management system, targeted at improving the safety and professionalism of trucking operators nationwide. TruckSafe was set up in 1996 in response to government concerns about what the road transport industry was doing to improve safety.

TruckSafe has been working hard to create a flexible and proactive risk-based approach to chain of responsibility (CoR), safety and compliance for its 180 members.

TruckSafe is the first and only industry-led scheme to provide a comprehensive CoR safety management system.

Additionally, today's launch includes an owner-driver SMS, specifically designed for individuals who operate their own vehicle without employees involved in their transport tasks.

Moving to a safety management system allows businesses to move away from a reactive, compliance-based approach to a flexible, risk-based approach that can be tailored to the size and activities of the business.

TruckSafe Chair Paul Fellows said the new TruckSafe SMSes were game changers.

"Not only will TruckSafe members be using best practice methods for the identification and management of safety risks, but they will also have the flexibility to create and use policies, procedures, and processes that suit their business activities rather than the one size fits all approach used by traditional, compliance-based schemes," Mr Fellows said.

Mr Fellows said that accredited TruckSafe members already met the majority of the SMS requirements. The requirements for the single vehicle owner-driver SMS would be even less onerous.

TruckSafe has also beefed up SMS resources for members, including an entirely new website devoted to providing detailed information.
