America has emerged from its elections as a deeply divided country, says Rodrigo Praino, Professor of Politics and Public Policy at Flinders University.
"Donald Trump's victory, especially in places like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, probably indicates that Americans decided to side with a new administration to fight the current cost of living crisis," says Professor Praino, who is Director of the Jeff Bleich Centre (JBC) for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies at the Flinders University College of Business, Government and Law.
"From now on it will be important to understand which parts of Trump's electoral rhetoric are destined to become policy decisions and which parts are going to be forgotten as electoral talk.
"America has emerged from its elections as a deeply divided country, with both sides certain that their opponents are ready to destroy American democracy as we know it.
"In this context, the work of the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies is more important and more timely than ever, as we tirelessly work to strengthen democratic institutions and ideals."
JBC and other Flinders University experts held a public forum (on 6 November) to discuss a range of key issues in the leadup to one of the most crucial US polls in history.
'US election results' event, held at the Flinders University City Campus, included expert panel discussions on social media misinformation, economic and immigration policies, foreign policy, women's and gender issues in voting, drugs and pharmaceuticals and the House and Senate elections.
